How to play rummy: the complete beginner's guide
Rummy is a card-melding game: arrange your 13 cards into valid sequences and sets before anyone else does. This guide takes you from the deal to the declaration, step by step.
Know the law
Rummy played online for money is banned across India since 1 May 2026 under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. This guide teaches the game itself — rules and skills — not money play.
The objective in one paragraph
Each player receives 13 cards. Your goal is to arrange all of them into valid groups — sequences (consecutive cards of one suit, like 4♠ 5♠ 6♠) and sets (same rank, different suits, like 9♥ 9♦ 9♣). The catch: at least one group must be a pure sequence — consecutive same-suit cards with no joker. First player to arrange a fully valid hand “declares” and wins the deal. New to the words? What you need
- Players: 2–6. Two-player games use one deck; more players need two decks.
- Cards: standard 52-card decks plus printed jokers, and one random wild joker chosen each deal.
- The table: a closed deck (face down), an open deck (discards, face up) and space to sort your hand.
Playing a deal, step by step
- Sort your hand. Group cards by suit on sight. Identify anything close to a sequence — that is your starting plan.
- Draw one card. On your turn, take the top card of the closed deck (unknown) or the open deck (visible to all, so opponents learn what you collect).
- Discard one card. You must end every turn with 13 cards again, so discard what helps you least — ideally high-value cards that fit no group.
- Build the pure sequence first. Until you hold one joker-free same-suit run, nothing else in your hand counts. Prioritise it over everything.
- Complete the remaining groups. Form a second sequence (jokers allowed) plus sets or sequences for the rest. Jokers — printed and wild — substitute any card in impure groups.
- Declare. With all 13 cards validly grouped, lay them down. A wrong declaration carries a full-count penalty, so double-check the pure sequence first.

Note: a set cannot hold two cards of the same suit — 9♥ 9♥ 9♦ is invalid in standard rules.
Scoring basics
The winner scores zero. Everyone else counts their ungrouped (“deadwood”) cards: number cards at face value, aces and face cards (J/Q/K) at 10 each, jokers at 0 — capped at 80 points. Fewer points is better. Full detail lives on the 13-card rules page.
Common formats
- Points rummy — one deal, winner takes the round. Fastest way to learn.
- Deals rummy — fixed number of deals; lowest total after the last deal wins.
- Pool rummy (101/201) — elimination across deals; cross the pool limit and you are out.
